Some autographs!

So this is about 6 months late, but things have been busy and I have a lot of pies that I have my hands in. I’ll try to keep this relatively brief because there’s details I imagine most people wouldn’t be all that interested in. So I’ll just briefly talk about what happened at New York Comic Con 2024.

For anyone who has never been to New York Comic Con (NYCC), it’s a 4-day convention that runs Thursday to Sunday. I typically go Thursday to Saturday. Thursday and Friday were basically MCU days for me because Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, and Paul Bettany were showing up. Saturday was Westeros day because Matt Smith, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Fabian Frankel were showing up.

I’m actually a veteran con attendee, so I know that certain types of celebrity guests are the popular A-tier ones. You need to be prepared for insane lines, which is why it is important you get to the waiting area for said celebrity as early as possible. You will need to sacrifice the time to go to other things at the con.

It also meant that when I purchase autograph or photograph sessions, I knew it was important I got Fabian’s and Tom’s as early in the day as possible or else I’d miss out on Matt. Truly I had foresight and I was glad I made that decision.

First up was taking a pic with Matt. Sorry about the weird cropping. I actually shared the photo-op with a co-worker/friend. Just for her privacy, I cropped her out of the picture.

Matt Smith and me

Yeah, I’m not the best with pictures I know.

I scheduled back-to-back autographs with Tom and Fabian. They were given tables next to each other and the lines were relatively short. Which actually gives you the chance to actually have a short conversation with them! It was nice.

Fabian asked me what I thought of the adaptation. I agreed they captured a good amount of the book, but also noted that it was also interesting the differences. And it is true. Some of the changes I might not personally like, but it is genuinely interesting the differences and some of the rationale behind them. Also it’s interesting to see what implications will happen in the show.

My convo with Tom was really brief. He made fun of Fabian’s autograph. “Why does yours look like bird feet? Were you in a rush or something?”

Fabian Frankel and me

And then later in the afternoon, I got the chance to take a pic with Fabian. It was cool.

I had to hurry after doing the picture because I had to get on Matt’s autograph line. It was nuts. I was stuck on the line for 3 whole hours. I don’t exaggerate. My brief chat with Matt included me warning him he had at least another 30-40 behind me left to see. And he was like “wow!” I joked that he’d better do some stretches and flexing his hands and wrists for the autographs he had left to do.

Over all, this was a lot of fun. I’ll be curious which guests are coming this year.
