The Conquest Movie Has a Straightforward Obvious Title

Well it was announced back on March 3, that Warner Brothers was planning a movie about Aegon the Conqueror and the conquest of Westeros. Personally I was very wary about this. Personally I think this should be a limited series. I might write a blog post about this at a later point in time.

In case you weren’t aware, Cinema Con is happening this week from April 13 to 16. If you weren’t familiar with what Cinema Con is, it’s a convention for cinema owners and film exhibitors. It’s where studios and production companies feature upcoming films and more info about greenlit movies in pre-production, etc. Of course as the con is happening, important announcements get discussed in major entertainment sites. I subscribe notifications for Variety, The Hollywood Report, and Deadline.

It seems that there was a presentation from Warner Brothers. Part of the presentation announced that the current working title for this movie is Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. I suppose this works okay for a movie about the Conquest. And I guess they need to include Game of Thrones in the title to make it clear which franchise it’s a part of. I think it’s goofy. This is a huge fantasy franchise around the world. Diehard fans like me (and presumably you) already know Aegon’s Conquest is about The Conquest of Westeros. But this is HBO’s policy of needing to spell it out since a lot of people are apparently dumb and don’t pay attention. I don’t know.

The screenwriter for the movie was announced last month as Beau Willimon. His credits include being the showrunner of House of Cards and Andor. Granted I didn’t watch either show, but I’m well aware they have gotten critical acclaim. I’ll be optimistic about this movie even if I do have some reservations about it. It’s pretty obvious to me that some kind of adaptation was going to happen considering the fandom as a whole is super fixated on incestuous dragon riders.

Unless they’ve been secretly working on this screenplay for over a year now, I imagine this movie won’t be released before 2029. Even if we assume the script is being worked on as I’m typing this, it’s going to take the rest of the year at least to have a complete screenplay with copious rewriters and notes from the studio and producers about it. And then you have to do the casting and tons of pre-production.

Hypothetically they could reuse locations and some sets from the three TV shows as many locations depicted in at least Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon showed up in the conquest as George wrote. But this is my speculation.

Given how much hype Warner Brothers is trying to drum up for this movie, I’m willing to bet they’re going to convince a big name to take on the role of Aegon. The Conquest is literally named after this guy. He’s the guy who started the Targaryen dynasty. He created the Iron Throne. I’ve seen plenty of fans pretty much begging for Henry Cavil to play the character. But I’m not sure how likely that is. He’s got other projects he’s involved in. Plus also I’d be curious to see if there’s any bad blood between him and Warner Brothers. We all know the mess about him with the DCEU reboot under James Gunn.

I’m really curious what you guys think about all this. Are you interested in watching a movie about the conquest of Westeros? Or would you prefer a tv show? Leave a comment and share your thoughts.
